How Iza changed her bad eating habits

Svelte Iza Calzado does not in any way look like the carefree girl who broke all the rules of healthy eating years ago.

“I was a couch potato,” she recalls those “sinful” days. “I didn’t have any sports. I ate and ate pizza for my midnight snack, doughnuts, candy, chocolate, name it!”

So when did the change of heart start?

It happened — but of course — when she was in her early teens and starting to get conscious about her figure.

“I was in second year high school,” says Iza. She started weaning herself away from the junk food she knew oh so well and switched to vegetables. She willed herself to go on a crash diet.

Iza has been red meat free for the past six years. She’s trying to go organic, too.

“It’s tough,” she admits. But Iza knows it’s the best way to go.

“A shorter life span can be traced back to what we put inside our mouth,” she reasons out.

Today, that slim figure is a product of eating fish, chicken and vegetables, push-ups, regular running, strength training for her arms and other healthy practices.

Iza also swears by herbal supplements and regularly sees a doctor who practices homeopathy.

The boxes of chocolate she gets as gifts remain unwrapped in their fancy containers. Iza recycles them by serving them to visitors or friends who come to her house.Last January, she had a one-hour cold laser treatment to clean her blood.“The procedure uses laser light to cleanse your system. I also had this oxygen chamber treatment that brings oxygen into your body and rids it of parasites, worms and others,” Iza goes on.

Healthy cooking
is a must at home.

“The way you cook your food is important,” she declares. “You may be eating vegetables, but if it’s buried in transfat, it’s useless.”

Her non-showbiz boyfriend helps Iza maintain her healthy lifestyle
. Himself an advocate of an alternative lifestyle, he sometimes asks Iza what her diet for the day is like.

Oh yes, she’s but human and admits to cheating on her diet once in a while. The little girl in her is still coaxing Iza to indulge a little once in a while.

At the presscon of her new show, Healthy Cravings (Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. on Q-11), Iza helped herself to a slice of cake for dessert.

Years ago, she would have just lounged on her favorite chair after a helping of chocolate cake or pancake. But not anymore today. Iza finds time to hit the gym and burn calories after enjoying her chocolate cake or any rich dessert.

Hosting Healthy Cravings with Chef Jeremy Favia of Fresh Choice Always (FCA) is therefore a welcome addition to her to-do list.

The show features the most flavorful healthy recipes and presents ways to be consistent with the diet, even when situations limit food choices. Iza and Jeremy show how you can eat healthy, even when you’re away from home — in school, the office, at a party, etc.

“It’s sad to see adobo, lechon, paksiw, crispy pata, liempo and the like as main party fare. Vegetables are merely side dishes,” observes Iza. She longs for the day when the tables are turned. Vegetables are the main event, while sinful dishes take the sidelines.

She may be all out for putting more vegetables on the table. But Iza is careful not to ram it down people’s throat.

“It’s not that I’m telling you to stop eating meat. It’s still your choice,” she clarifies. “But I would like to encourage more people to eat more vegetables.”

Thus, Healthy Cravings will show televiewers how to prepare vegetarian adobo, among other traditional local dishes. Chef Jeremy will guide people watching at home how to make healthy sinigang broth.

Three recipes — two main course dishes and one dessert — will emphasize nutrition and health.

Healthy Cravings may not convince all televiewers to go vegetarian. The show’s executives realize that. But if it opens minds and makes people ask questions about healthy eating, half the battle is won. If it helps small organic farmers by convincing people to buy their produce, so much the better.

Then Iza, Chef Jeremy, Chef Sau del Rosario and others who have a hand in the show, will feel rewarded. Then the show’s impact will stretch on and on, not just for a season or the here and now. It will cover an entire lifetime of healthy habits as well.

Basta happy ako nu’ng Valentine’s Day.

Hindi kasi ako sure, kasi I have yet to sit down with them about this. Hindi lang natuloy ‘yung pag-sit down ko sa mga GMA executives. Medyo napagod din ako sa Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit,” pahayag ni Iza.

Speaking of langit, naabot na ba niya ang langit?

“Oo, nakabalik na nga ako sa lupa! Ha! Ha! Ha!” sey niya.

Ilang beses niyang naabot?

“Ay, teka, iba pala ang ibig ninyong sabihin, huh! Ha! Ha! Ha! Kaya pala. Ano ito? Tapos na ‘yon. Saglit lang. Preno muna ako! Ha! Ha! Ha!” bawi ni Iza sa una niyang sagot.

Iza Calzado welcomes "wholesome" change after playing mature role in her last soap

"I'm actually quite honored that from all the cast members, kami ni Buboy [Villar] ay napasama pa rin dito sa Panday Kids. I'm playing a special role in a way dahil I don't know if it's going to be a regular role," sambit ni Iza nang ma-interview siya ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa grand press launch ng Panday Kids noong February 16 sa Studio 5 ng GMA Network Center.

Kaya pumayag ako when it was offered to me kasi it just makes sense, I am playing the same role. Iba lang ang treatment dito sa TV. Dito kasi mas na-established na Maria Makiling is the protector of nature. Ipinapakita niya yung powers niya," paliwanag niya.

"That's why we keep on saying before na she's a mystical character. She wasn't a princess. She actually has powers. She knew that Panday was the chosen one. Hindi masyadong na-establish yun sa movie. If you remember, kaya siya gustong pakasalan ni Lizardo [Ang Panday's main villain] because of her powers. Gusto ni Lizardo na lumakas pa siya. Siguro sa Part 2 ng Ang Panday ie-establish siya or something para mas makikilala na ng mga tao si Maria," saad ni Iza.

Ano ang mae-expect ng mga manonood sa kanya sa TV series?

"Hopefully, magkaroon ako ng fight scenes. Pero hindi pa ako sure kasi, like I said, I don't know yet if it's a regular character. As of now, we have yet to make certain kung talagang dito ako. Kasi in the beginning I was contacted for a special role. Pero yun nga, I don't know if my role will get bigger or not."

"But I think whatever it is, I'm just happy to be part of this. It's such a wholesome show. Siyempre, ako, coming from an afternoon slot [Sine Novela Presents Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit] of GMA with a much mature theme, it's good to be in a wholesome show naman. At saka iba talaga yung TV sa movie. Mas marami kasing batang nakakapanood sa TV dahil it's free, di ba?"

A HAPPY VALENTINE.

"Yes, very happy!" sagot naman niya.

"Hindi ko alam what the show has in store for them because I'm only a judge and I'm not part of the production. But I know it's going to be a very big thing, special night."

"Yes, they deserve to be in the finals, all of them. Not [only] for working hard for the challenges, some of them really had that X-factor that people love. Hindi mo talaga maintindihan that people love them and vote for them. So, they really deserve to be there," sabi niya.

"She was one of them, like two or three na we were expecting na matatanggal. Kasi ano, e, she actually made it pretty far. Because bago pa lang siya, sinasabihan siyang 'low bat' at walang energy. But she has this certain charm like in the way she would answer. Personality niya yun, e. Low bat man, nakakatuwa siya.

"I keep telling them, all 14 [finalists] of them, have one foot on the door. Some of them will go through the door, not meaning they would shine as bright as the other StarStruck. Some of them might even surpass the Final 2."

Any fearless forecast?

"No fearless forecast. I'd like to keep it to myself until the Final Judgment," sabi ni Iza.

Iza craves for more challenges

ASK Iza Calzado how she feels about people regarding her as an elite and she will promptly parry the praise. “I don’t want to think about it unless I become comfortable where I’m at in my career. There are so many other things I want to do that I can’t afford to sit down and relax. I am happy that I already have a place in the business that no one can take away from me, but I want to show more...do more,” she says without any tinge of false modesty.

Then again, Iza does not need to talk about her achievements. As they say, the work speaks for itself. In 2009, Iza had projects that further solidified her reputation as a multi-faceted talent. Comedy? She has appeared as a guest on “Bubble Gang.” Drama? She plays the lead character in “Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit.” As a performer? She sings on “SOP Rules.” Hosting? She emceed for “Bb Pilipinas 2009” and earned rave reviews for being an excellent host. Guiding aspiring stars? She’s part of the “StarStruck V” jury.

And then there’s “The Echo,” the Hollywood version of the Filipino film “Sigaw.” Although she had already won the Urian Best Supporting Actress Award in 2005 for her role in the original version, getting to reprise the same in the international version by auditioning for it speaks of Iza’s caliber as an actress--make that Hollywood actress. “I was elevated to a new height in my career when I got the role in ‘The Echo.’ For me, it’s the kind of feeling that no romantic relationship or money could replace,” says Iza who co-starred with Hollywood actor Jesse Bradford in the film.

Despite the big strides she has made in acting, Iza wants to take on even more challenging roles including playing out the lifestory of heroine Gabriela Silang onscreen, or a character akin to that Glenn Close played in “Fatal Attraction.” “And then after those two, I’d like to do a romantic comedy naman para sobrang iba at para maipakita ko talaga na kaya kong gampanan kahit ano’ng role, kahit na ba a light one,” she said.

The Hollywood actress gets inspiration from revered Filipino actresses Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos and Maricel Soriano. “Si Nora, mata pa lang niya ang gamitin niya, acting na agad. Her eyes speak the language of her soul. Hinahangaan ko naman sila Vilma at Maricel not only for their acting kundi in the way they handle their lives,” she said.

As for the younger set of actresses, Iza counts Jean Garcia, Eula Valdez, Cherry Pie Picache and Judy Ann Santos as among her favorites. The coming 2010 promises to be an even bigger year for Iza. Aside from her ongoing projects, she is set to star in the remake of the Ishmael Bernal movie, “Working Girls,” along with Ruffa Gutierrez, Cristine Reyes and Bianca King.

But not before “Panday” is released on Dec. 25. A Metro Manila Film Festival entry starring Sen. Bong Revilla, Jr. in the title role, “Panday” casts Iza as a mystical character “with lots of beauty shots,” she joked. “It’s a light role but one that shows my versatility if you look at my body of work kasi iba siya sa usual dramatic roles na ginagawa ko. And, anyway, there are no small roles, only small actors.”
