YES! visits Gerald Anderson at home this March

Gerald Anderson did not always lead a charmed life. Many assume that just because he was born to an American father and a Filipina mother, his cards have always held good fortune. Gerald sits down with YES! magazine this March in the comfort of his home and talks about his life's journey before showbiz beckoned. It is a story that is made richer by the testimonies of his parents, Randy and Vangie.

Fans first got to know Gerald as the Fil-Am cutie born in Olongapo and raised in General Santos City, but many don't know that he also spent much of his childhood in the States. Gerald's father Randy talks about how he first bought a big house in San Antonio, Texas, then later moved the family to Kansas City, Missouri upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy.

Even if the family lived in a middle-class neighborhood, Randy explains to YES!, "Missouri is not New York or Los Angeles or even Manila. A lot of people are rural, they come from the country... It wasn't a ghetto, or the slum... But it wasn't the best place."

Eventually, the family moved to Springfield, Missouri, where they had a house with a sprawling backyard. It was here that Gerald's mom Vangie set up her own store and started a weekend tiangge selling Filipino food to Pinoys living in the neighboring towns.

At the age of eight, Gerald would take care of many things, including doing the heavy lifting for their senior citizen customers. They could have enlisted the help of others, but for Gerald, helping out his mom was not a burden.

Although Mommy Vangie's homesickness found her moving back to her hometown in General Santos City alone, it was Gerald's devotion to her that reunited them. Gerald, together with his father and brother, came to GenSan to visit her. But minutes away from boarding the flight that would take them back to the States, Gerald realized that she wouldn't be joining them and he refused to let go of her.

The sight of his son crying and refusing to leave his mother made Randy bring his family back to GenSan, and he later returned to the States by his lonesome.

Gerald may now be living on his own in Manila, but his house has a room for Mommy Vangie and for his brother Kenneth, who is a pilot currently in Florida. More than 85 photos in the March issue of YES! shows how the three-storey house looks very modern and masculine, while the interiors also carry the feel of a modern bachelor's pad. Gerald's fans played a big role in furnishing his house-the main door made of narra was a present from a fan, and so were the dining set, a console table by the second-floor window, miniature cars to add to his collection, and other home accents.

Kim Chiu also lends her touch to his house, as the NBA bobbleheads she gave him sit on a shelf above his TV set and the center table is displayed prominently in his living room. But her biggest contribution to his house is the impressive silver Samsung refrigerator that dominates his kitchen. A birthday present from Kim, Gerald was overwhelmed by the sight of the two-door ref with a freezer in the bottom and a water- and ice-dispensing feature. "Sobrang laki! Lumiit 'yong kusina ko dahil doon!" he recalls telling SNN last year.

Is the grand gift a sign that they have, indeed, taken the on-screen chemistry off-screen? "We're talagang mutual understanding, pero hanggang doon pa lang," he admits. What exactly does that mean? Find out in the March issue of YES!, available in newsstands, bookstores, and supermarkets nationwide.

Iza Calzado welcomes "wholesome" change after playing mature role in her last soap

"I'm actually quite honored that from all the cast members, kami ni Buboy [Villar] ay napasama pa rin dito sa Panday Kids. I'm playing a special role in a way dahil I don't know if it's going to be a regular role," sambit ni Iza nang ma-interview siya ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa grand press launch ng Panday Kids noong February 16 sa Studio 5 ng GMA Network Center.

Kaya pumayag ako when it was offered to me kasi it just makes sense, I am playing the same role. Iba lang ang treatment dito sa TV. Dito kasi mas na-established na Maria Makiling is the protector of nature. Ipinapakita niya yung powers niya," paliwanag niya.

"That's why we keep on saying before na she's a mystical character. She wasn't a princess. She actually has powers. She knew that Panday was the chosen one. Hindi masyadong na-establish yun sa movie. If you remember, kaya siya gustong pakasalan ni Lizardo [Ang Panday's main villain] because of her powers.

Pero hindi pa ako sure kasi, like I said, I don't know yet if it's a regular character. As of now, we have yet to make certain kung talagang dito ako. Kasi in the beginning I was contacted for a special role. Pero yun nga, I don't know if my role will get bigger or not."

"But I think whatever it is, I'm just happy to be part of this. It's such a wholesome show. Siyempre, ako, coming from an afternoon slot [Sine Novela Presents Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit] of GMA with a much mature theme, it's good to be in a wholesome show naman. At saka iba talaga yung TV sa movie. Mas marami kasing batang nakakapanood sa TV dahil it's free, di ba?"

A HAPPY VALENTINE.

"Yes, very happy!" sagot naman niya.

"Hindi ko alam what the show has in store for them because I'm only a judge and I'm not part of the production. But I know it's going to be a very big thing, special night."

"Yes, they deserve to be in the finals, all of them. Not [only] for working hard for the challenges, some of them really had that X-factor that people love. Hindi mo talaga maintindihan that people love them and vote for them. So, they really deserve to be there," sabi niya.

"She was one of them, like two or three na we were expecting na matatanggal. Kasi ano, e, she actually made it pretty far. Because bago pa lang siya, sinasabihan siyang 'low bat' at walang energy. But she has this certain charm like in the way she would answer. Personality niya yun, e. Low bat man, nakakatuwa siya.

"I keep telling them, all 14 [finalists] of them, have one foot on the door. Some of them will go through the door, not meaning they would shine as bright as the other StarStruck. Some of them might even surpass the Final 2."

Any fearless forecast?

"No fearless forecast. I'd like to keep it to myself until the Final Judgment," sabi ni Iza.

JC de Vera does not know yet if he'll stay as a Kapuso when his contract ends this March

Kasi nag-take advantage ako doon sa Christmas season.

"Marami akong fight scenes dito.

"Well, as always, grateful ako. Very grateful ako and happy," sagot ni JC.

WORKING WITH THE PANDAY KIDS.

So, parang magiging teacher nila ako."

At lahat sila, pag sinabi mong fight scene, pag sinabi mong action, bigay todo talaga," lahad niya.

KISSING SCENE WITH JACKIE. First time makatrabaho ni JC si Jackie Rice.

Work naman yun, wala namang malisya yun."

"She's down to earth," sagot ni JC. Basta yung taping day na yun, two to three scenes lang ang nagawa namin, then tapos na siya. Kaya wala kaming time talaga to bond and to talk."

NO LOVELIFE. Wala ba siyang girlfriend ngayon?

"Girlfriend? Wala, matagal na," sabi niya.

How about dating?

"Dating?

Since wala siyang girlfriend, posible bang ma-attract at ligawan niya si Jackie?

"Wala siguro. Trabaho na lang muna kami," sagot niya.

FACING THE CONTROVERSIES.

Ayoko munang magsalita ngayon. After nun, at saka ako magsasalita."

So, bakit ako magwo-worry?"

Kung meron siyang nire-regret noong 2009, ano yun?

"Siguro yung lack of self-esteem.

"So, ngayong 2010, mas tina-try kong maging mas independent. Pero siyempre, si Tita Annabelle will always be there," sabi niya.

HATING KAPATID.

Work po yun, e.
