Judy Ann Santos on being Jamby’s ‘folly’: 'I was deeply hurt'

Actress Judy Ann Santos admits she was “deeply hurt” with the recent statement made by Sen. Maria Ana Consuelo "Jamby" Madrigal about the use of actors in election campaigns being “an insult to the Filipino intelligence.”

"Honestly...[I was hurt] with the words she used [and how she said] she regrets getting my services... Of course, I am not callous. I got hurt because I really believed she got my services [then] because she actually believed in me and it was a sincere offer," Judy Ann said.

Madrigal made her statement at the "Inquirer First Edition: Presidential Debates," organized by the Philippine Daily Inquirer and co-sponsored by Globe Telecom and the UP College of Mass Communication.

Without naming Santos, a celebrity she enlisted during her senatorial campaign in 2004, the re-electionist senator was quoted as saying thus: "I have seen the folly of my ways... I will not repeat [getting a celebrity endorser] because I do not believe you [must] repeat a mistake. But I also don't believe you should perpetuate lies that are perpetuated by a big budget."

Santos said she respects Madrigal’s opinion.

“I won’t prevent [her from sharing her opinion] nor will I pick a fight [with her], or even answer [the seeming challenge] as if I have no sense of gratitude. I am an educated person."

Asked how she found herself supporting Madrigal, who was then widely perceived as a mere unknown running solely on big bucks, Santos gave a succinct answer.

“I thought that it's okay. We were friends and she belongs to the same party as that of my Tatay Ron [the late Fernando Poe, Jr.]."

Santos denied it was all about the money. Madrigal reportedly paid her a hefty sum to appear in ads and join in political sorties.

“[My career] is not all about money. It’s not as if because I am from show business, there’s always money involved [with the services I give], no. Not all actors are the same. Please don’t lump us all in the same boat. It’s like saying that we weren’t brought up properly, schooled properly…and that we will only act, do something, when we get paid.”

Santos said she does not regret campaigning for the former senatorial candidate.

“I did it because I believed in her. It's just that, [I didn’t realize] she didn’t believe in me."

“Maybe before one endorses a politician, it is best that one should get to really know them first.”

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with DZMM, Madrigal clarified her stand on the matter saying she did not regret getting Santos' service during the 2004 senatorial campaign.

She made it clear that she is grateful for the part Santos played in that election, which allowed her to win a seat in the august halls of the senate.

Madrigal said she already thanked Santos personally twice—right after winning in 2004 and before announcing her candidacy for the May 2010 polls.

As to making a statement that decried the use of celebrity endorsers, Madrigal said she was simply emphasizing the need for people to focus more on the candidates' actual plans or platforms.

Roxanne Guinoo to wed next year

Actress Roxanne Guinoo is altar-bound, TV host Boy Abunda announced via the talk show “Showbiz News Ngayon,” February 16.

“Magpapakasal na si Roxanne Guinoo next year,” he declared.

According to Abunda, the wedding was supposed to happen this year if not for a bit of "glitch."

Isang tawag lamang. Salamat,” Abunda added.

Abunda is grateful that Roxanne chose to announce her forthcoming wedding through his shows.

I’m really, really happy for you. Salamat sa iyong tiwala sa ‘The Buzz’ at sa ‘Showbiz News Ngayon’.”

Roxanne Guinoo has been less visible of late.

She backed out from "Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal" after refusing to do some intimate scene, which her role required. She had already taped a few episodes in the soap when she decided to quit.

According to reports, this is all because Guinoo's boyfriend, a rich non-showbiz Filipino-Chinese a few years her junior, is the jealous type.

Roxanne reportedly brought along this Chinese boyfriend to showbiz functions including the premiere night of “Yaya and Angelina: The Spoiled Brat Movie.”

In the media huddle for "Precious Heart Romances" a few months ago, Roxanne disclosed how happy she was with him.

Roxanne’s past loves include fellow Star Circle Quest finalist Joross Gamboa, and Jake Cuenca.

StarStruck V finalist Enzo Pineda: "I don't want to be overconfident, but I want to be the next Ultimate Survivor."

Pero of course, we have to do our best. It's the Final 5. We all deserve to be here, so we all have to prove ourselves to be the next Ultimate Survivors," sabi ni Enzo nang makausap siya ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa presscon para sa Final 5 ng StarStruck V last Monday, February 15.

"For me, noong pumasok ako sa StarStruck, very positive akong tao," ani Enzo. "At the same time, mas naging strong ako as a person to handle intriga. I have so much to prove sa mga tao.

"For me, it's not a hindrance kasi ito pa ang nagpu-push sa akin to prove harder.

OFFERING HIMSELF TO PEOPLE. Ano ang mga nabago sa kanya since he joined StarStruck V?

"Nabago in the sense na marami po akong taong na-inspire. Yun naman po ang habol ko, e. I love performing. I love inspiring other people and, for me, I did a good job in doing that. I'm here not because of fame, fortune, money. I'm here because I love to work and this is my passion.

"At the same time, this is the best opportunity to improve myself. Ako, as a performer, I offer myself sa stage to inspire other people and share God-given talent," saad ng 19-year-old StarStruck survivor.

"I don't want to be overconfident, but I want to be the next Ultimate Survivor and I believe in myself," sagot ni Enzo. "Hindi ko ine-expect na nandun ako, mananalo ako, but I want to the next. Nandun ang gutom ko to be the next... Pero at the same time, my goal doesn't end there. After ng StarStruck, marami pa pong challenges na darating and I'm looking forward to that."

Kung hindi man daw siya ang palaring manalo, he will always consider being in StarStruck as a blessing.

"I will still gonna feel blessed. Good opportunity, nag-improve ako, so parang what more can you expect? And at the same time, you don't have to win this competition to be the next Ultimate Survivor.

"For me, my edge is my personality," sagot niya. "Ang talent naman po, nandiyan. Lahat naman po ng tao may talento. Pero it's how you use it. It's your personality. So, it's an ongoing process."

ENZO'S CHOICE. Sina Marky Cielo at Aljur Abrenica ang idols ni Enzo among the StarStruck graduates.

"For me, sina Marky at Aljur, halos pantay lang po sila. Magaling silang umarte, at the same time, si Aljur marunong kumanta. Si Marky naman, magaling sumayaw. Very successful sila," sabi ni Enzo.

Of course, nagkailangan kami and nagkaroon ng problems before. Pero now, friends muna. But yun nga, gusto ko siya. So, step by step. For me, masaya siya dahil friends kami. Pero hindi po namin iniisip yung mga ligawan for now."

Rich Asuncion has yet to get her cash prize as last year's Bb. Pilipinas 1st runner-up

Pilipinas. Bilang first runner-up ay P75,000 ang cash prize na matatanggap niya at bilang Ms. Natasha, isang special award, ay makakakuha rin daw siya dapat ng P100,000. Pero wala pa raw nakukuha maski singko.

"Kaya nga, e, di ba? Pina-follow-up ko lagi.

Well, in fact, hindi naman nila ako tinatawagan.

Pilipinas—Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, Bb. Pilipinas-World, at Bb. Pilipinas-International.

Pati yung Universe, yung Natasha niya, kakabigay lang last week. So, di ba? Sakit sa ulo! Lagi akong nagpa-follow-up, laging sinasabi, 'Sige next week...ganun-ganun, sige.'

"Ang sasabihin ko lang sa kanila, I have to get my prize because I deserve it.

So, walang dahilan para magkaselosan sila?

"Wala, as in wala."

PBB Double Up winner Melai Cantiveros answers intrigue that she was ABS-CBN's "bet to win"

I love you all!" sambit niya.

WRONG ENGLISH.

Pero kasi old curriculum pa yung iniwan ko kaya baka pag bumalik ako second year ulit ako."

RELATIONSHIP WITH JASON IS NO STRATEGY.

May nagkaka-inlaban bang strategy?

"Hindi po all over!" sagot niya.

"Good luck po daw. Wish niya daw the best sa aking buhay."

READY TO FIGHT FOR HER FAMILY.

Panday Kids's Buboy Villar dismisses rivalry issue with Zaijian Jaranilla

Robert "Buboy" Villar had no inkling on the role he would play in the continuously expanding Panday franchise.

Although he was part of the modern movie adaptation shown last year at the 35th Metro Manila Film Festival, Ang Panday, Buboy's role was relatively minor as compared to the other big stars tapped to give life to the story of the iconic blacksmith.

The blockbuster success of the film version which starred Bong Revilla Jr. encouraged GMA-7 to come up with a spin-off meant this time for primetime viewing. But instead of rehashing previous installments, the network has decided to modernize the legend by introducing new characters who will represent a new generation of superheroes.

ACTION BUBOY. "Masyado po akong natuwa," said Buboy about his feeling when his mom broke the good news.

Joining Buboy in giving face to Panday Kids are newcomers Julian Trono and Sabrina Man.

Also part of the cast are Marvin Agustin, Iza Calzado, JC de Vera, Gelli de Belen, Polo Ravales, Ryan Eigenmann, Jackie Rice, Jose Manalo, Tirso Cruz III, Pen Medina, Marissa Delgado, Nanette Inventor, Bernard Palanca, Isabel Granada, Rich Asuncion, Akihiro Sato, and Jolina Magdangal.

The series, which will premiere on February 22, had a grand press conference last night at Studio 5 of GMA Network Center in Quezon City.

Buboy is no stranger to delivering and witnessing action scenes. Most of Buboy's previous television projects are of the action-fantasy genre like Super Twins (2007), Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan (2007), Zorro (2009), and Darna (2009). Even his old project with ABS-CBN, Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkanto, back in 2007 leaned in that direction.

The pressure placed on Buboy's young shoulders is undeniable. Playing the lead means additional responsibility and dedication. He has to undergo fight training for the role of Oliver.

Is it hard playing a lead role, given all the demands and expectations from top management?

NO RIVALRY WITH ZAIJIAN. Buboy is being considered as one of the Kapuso network's top child stars. It's inevitable for him to be pitted against ABS-CBN's own bet, Zaijian Jaranilla of May Bukas Pa fame.

The supposed rivalry between the two continues to tickle the viewers fancy. Here is Santino (Zaijian's character in May Bukas Pa), the religious soft-spoken boy against the street-smart Ding (Buboy's role in Darna)—two contrasting images that shape a child-star rivalry in modern television.

A television commercial produced by a popular milk brand featuring Buboy and Zaijian failed, however, to stop the brewing competition.

Everything went well during the commercial shoot, "Nagbibiruan naman po kami."

Nevertheless, the rivalry is not lost on Buboy who's aware that he and Zaijian are being pitted against each other by the media. Being asked about Zaijian has in fact become commonplace for the tan-skinned child star.

"Opo. nararamdaman ko po 'yon," admitted Buboy about the so-called rivalry. Turning serious and sounding like a grown-up, Buboy continued, "Pero wala po sa akin 'yon."
